THE SCOTTISH VINTAGE BUS MUSEUM –
2011 KIRKBY STEPHEN RUNNING DAY
Ex Fife
Bristol Lodekka FS6G, FRD199, BXA 464B, had just passed its Class 6 MoT after
having its engine rebuilt by Jim Methven and Mike Chapman (Workshop Reports). Later in the day
the subject of Kirkby Stephen came up and the owners talked themselves into
giving the bus a decent test run, and that was that. We decided to go down to
Cumbria for just the Saturday Running Day, and spread the word to see if
anybody fancied joining us but very few came forward.
We left about half six and
went via Dunfermline to pick up another passenger then headed towards Glasgow
to collect one more at Hamilton Services on the M74, before heading South. Our
journey passed without any hitches and I would think that Jim and Mike were
rightly proud of themselves when we reached Brough just after half 9.
The rally site was a busy
scene with constant bus movement, static displays and stalls galore. We saw
several familiar vehicles right away, beavering away on the free service to
Kirkby Stephen train station. After a quick bite to eat, I took a few photos
before jumping on an ex Barton Leyland decker for Kirkby Stephen train station.
It took us ages to reach Kirkby, stuck in a very slow-moving traffic queue. It
turned out that a delivery van was blocking Kirkby’s main street, the driver
either oblivious to or ignoring the disruption he was causing but he had gone
by the time we reached the Town Centre and we arrived at the station without
further trouble.
The station area was very busy with buses constantly coming
and going and people changing from bus to bus and to and from trains. I had a
wander round and met a group of Lathalmond stalwarts waiting for a train on the
Settle-Carlisle railway. I then jumped on ex Florence Motors 1948 AEC Regal,
the first of several trips, and whilst waiting for it to leave tried a couple
of photos from inside, of ex Barrow Corporation 1958 Leyland PD2/40 CEO957 and
Ex Alexander 1949 Leyland Tiger PS1/1. I left the Regal in the Town centre, had
a look around, then took some more photos.
The separate row below shows the buses I travelled on,
between taking the other photos. Most of the trips were on buses running
between Kirkby and Brough but an exception was a circular trip on the 1946
Leyland Tiger, CRN80. It headed West along the A66 before turning left into
Warcop. From there it took a winding, circuitous route that brought us back
into Kirkby at its North-end.
At the end of the day there was a Road Run that headed from
Brough to Kirkby, turning right at the same North-end junction. It then
followed an even more winding, circuitous route, eventually coming back into
Kirkby from the South and heading directly back to Brough. FRD199 joined the pack,
and the only comment I would make is, “Thank goodness I wasn’t driving!”
